Petitions of St. Augustine

O Lord Jesus, let me know myself, let me know Thee,

And desire nothing else but only Thee.

Let me hate myself and love Thee

And do all things for the sake of Thee.

Let me humble myself, and exalt thee,

And think of nothing else but Thee.

Let me die to myself, and live in Thee,

And take whatever happens as coming from Thee,

Let me forsake myself and walk after Thee,

And ever desire to follow Thee.

Let me flee from myself, and turn to Thee,

That so I may merit to be defended by Thee.

Let me fear for myself, let me fear Thee,

And be amongst those who are chosen by Thee.

Let me distrust myself, and trust in Thee,

And ever obey for the love of Thee.

Let me cleave to nothing but Thee,

And ever be poor for the sake of Thee.

Look upon me, that I may love Thee;

Call me, that I may see Thee

And forever possess Thee. Amen

Prayer of St. Gertrude to the Sacred Heart

Sanctity of the Heart of Jesus, consecrate my heart; providence of the Heart of Jesus, watch over my heart; unchangeableness of the Heart of Jesus, strengthen my heart; purity of the Heart of Jesus, purify my heart; obedience of the Heart of Jesus, subjugate my heart; amiability of the Heart of Jesus, make Thyself known to my heart; divine attractions of the Heart of Jesus, captivate my heart; riches of the Heart of Jesus, do ye suffice for my heart; floods of grace and blessing that flow from the heart of Jesus, inundate my heart. O Heart of Jesus! be Thou my joy, my peace, my repose in this world and in the next. O Heart of Jesus! adored in heaven, invoked on earth, feared in hell, reign over all hearts, reign throughout all ages, reign forever in celestial glory. Amen.

New Ideas Are Simply Old Mistakes or Why I Love G.K. Chesterton

I found this delightful quote in an essay by GK Chesterton titled “Why I Am a Catholic” there are more gems lurking in this particular essay and since I have provided nothing lengthy for you to read click on the link to read the rest:

Nine out of ten of what we call new ideas are simply old mistakes. The Catholic Church has for one of her chief duties that of preventing people from making those old mistakes; from making them over and over again forever, as people always do if they are left to themselves. The truth about the Catholic attitude towards heresy, or as some would say, towards liberty, can best be expressed perhaps by the metaphor of a map. The Catholic Church carries a sort of map of the mind which looks like the map of a maze, but which is in fact a guide to the maze. It has been compiled from knowledge which, even considered as human knowledge, is quite without any human parallel. There is no other case of one continuous intelligent institution that has been thinking about thinking for two thousand years. Its experience naturally covers nearly all experiences; and especially nearly all errors.

Definition of a Liturgist

“A liturgist is an affliction sent by God so that Catholics living in a time when there is no overt persecution need not be denied the privilege of suffering for the faith.” Christopher Derrick

What Gets Sharpie Marker Off Of Grout?

I heard you. You said, “Nothing.”

One of the very hard parts about homeschooling is that not only do you not have as much time to devote to housecleaning but those people are underfoot making a mess for much more of each day. Yes. They have chores. Yes we try, but periodically you just have to stop school and clean. It was time. And this time, I got a new toy to help me.

A Ladybug XL2300 TANCS

Yes. It’s expensive. But this took permanent marker off of grout! Half my house is windows and the other half is grout so clean grout is something that means a lot to me. I’ve put my new toy through the paces the last two days. I’ve cleaned glass, mirrors, my slate backsplash (the backsplash behind the stove had some oil splases on it and the Ladybug dissolved them), I’ve cleaned the guck out of every crevice I could find in every bathroom and kitchen, green mildew off of the outside windows ledges, my oven, the gaskets on the oven, the bathroom my children use (they are under contract with a local terrorist organization to conduct biological warfare experiments in there), the refrigerator….deep sigh, let me tell you what kind of clean this did in the refrigerator…it cleaned my laminate flooring like a dream and all without any chemicals whatsoever. I am in. love.

Two things that I did use a little chemical boost for. Hard water scale is almost untouched by the Ladybug. A little Lime Away assist fixed that. Vinegar would probably work too. Soap scum was just a little too sticky without a little squirt of Scrub Free.

Still ahead….death to the dust mites in the carpet, and freshening of the living room upholstery. When it’s not cleaning, the Ladybug can supply steam for taking the wrinkles out of clothes too.

So that’s what I have been doing today instead of blogging. A pumpkin-praline cheesecake, and some shopping are on deck tomorrow.

Blogging Into the Coming Year….

I’ve finished my church history lectures [sound of popping champagne corks]. So hopefully we I catch up with things like Christmas cards, Christmas shopping, and papers for the classes I have been taking at the seminary, I’ll come up with something approaching original content. In any case, I have been thinking about the direction I’d like to go with this blog in the coming year. I’ve thought about including some more personal content especially with respect to the journey my husband and I may be taking toward the Diaconate. After 18 months of preparation, we’ll be official applicants beginning in January 2008 and we should know by next fall whether we have been accepted. Is that too dull for a blog? Does anyone care to know about that journey? I also think that I would also like to use this blog to add focus to my prayer life and blog prayer intentions just in case anyone would like to share in those as well. As for apologetics, I’m feeling some “Theology of the Body” posts welling up inside of me. Particularly, in light of some of what I learned while preparing for these Church history lectures and the Church’s fight for Trinitarian doctrine.

I don’t have many “regular” readers of this blog. Most people seem to drop by as the result of a Google search and that’s ok because mostly I blog just to hear myself talk. (As the mother of three, sometimes you just need to go someplace where you can pretend people are listening to you. [grin]) BUT….I’d be curious to know what you think if you’d like to share. You are also welcome to email me (you can find my email address in the ‘about me’ link) or leave a private message in my ‘guest book’ on the sidebar.

This is Just Too Funny!!

When Catholics discuss their faith with non-Catholics sometimes it seems we are having entriely different conversations. Well little did I know that there is a documented reason for this. It’s called Romish Receptive Aphasia.

Here’s a sample:

In retrospect, I too had the RRA Syndrome 5 years ago when my wife first started to
share Romish thoughts with me. (I am making a self-diagnosis here)
When she said “I have been thinking about returning to the Catholic Church,”
I heard: I want to join that church of infidels and man-made religion.

This Does Not Surprise Me

Which kind of monk are you?
Carthusian

Carthusian
You are a hermit who neither needs nor desires the companionship of others. Your spirituality manifests itself by a love for the entire world, embracing them in the love of Christ through solitary prayer, silence, & penance for the salvation of all. It’s hard to tell how you would get along with others because you’re hardly ever with anybody else. You are silent and mysterious, often evoking deep emotions in those in your presence.
